This is a map of the United States.
One of the things we must do as citizens over the next four years is remind President Bush (cough, moan, snicker, sniffle) that he is the president of all 50 states, not just the red states, and that he represents all those liberals in Massachussetts as well as all the people in Ohio and Colorado who voted for his bash-the-homos amendments. Look closely at this map. I deliberately chose one that doesn't feature the 2000 or 2004 election returns.

Progressives, remember that you have to try to win the hearts and minds of people all over this country, not just those states that are contiguous with Canada, which seems to be all we can win at the moment. I grew up learning and studying this map, but the only one I seem to see these days is the red-versus-blue map, which is hooey. There are millions upon millions of progressives in so-called "red America" and millions of conservatives in "blue America." I don't expect this President (cue John Kerry) to unite us, but if we ever want to win a majority again, we're going to have to figure out how to do it.
